Tips on loose leash walking (video)
Loose leash walking has a lot of complexity to it. In reality, there are many behaviours that need to be taught but even more importantly every change in the environment can affect it! Here are a few tips and tricks that you can try while training your dog.
Why didn't I use a clicker?
Looking back at the muzzle training video I could have changed many things to make the training more successful and the progress faster. Clicker training is a powerful tool but isn't necessary. Every session is a learning experience not only for the dog but also for the trainer. I'm not afraid to try and learn from the "miss-takes" I make. It's not a failure it's an information-gathering process
From fearful to confident
Working with fearful dogs is based on consistency and predictability. Environment plays a huge role and can easily exacerbate fear. The animal shelter environment is very difficult as everything there is different for the dog. That’s why it’s even more fulfilling to watch a transformation dogs can go through in there.
Where you can learn about animal training (video)
Learning is a huge passion of mine. Learning about animal training is my two biggest passions coming together! I would love to inspire you to learn more and continue to grow. It's not always easy and there can be plenty of obstacles (time, money, lack of guidance). Fortunately, there are many resources to learn from (much more than mentioned in the video) and I hope you will be able to find a suitable one for your situation.
Prong collars and treating people with kindness
I approached the subject of using prong collars with curiosity, without judgment. I listened and I understood. I can relate to people using them in their situation. And that’s how I was able to take the collar off. Not by judgment but by understanding.
Consequences drive behaviour (videos)
While on Peggy Hogan’s clinic with amazing, educated horses she reminded me of a very important distinction. It’s not what we do that makes the behaviour happen. Consequences drive behaviour.
Letting myself learn
It's ok to have a feeling of not being good enough. Let it be, accept it and most importantly LET IT GO. Find something positive in your life, something that you are grateful for like a dog wagging his tail or asking to be petted. And then you can see the previous situation in a different light. Expecting too much from myself isn't fair. Letting myself learn will be.
Many times we don’t even bother trying to learn a new skill. We convince ourselves that it’s not for us. When what we could do is to find the first successive approximation and start learning through a fun and successful process.
